European settlement starting in the late 1800s had a major impact on what the Valleylands is today. Two tour itineraries, one driving, one cycling or driving profile the colourful past, how settlers adapted to the region and shaped the way it is today.



Driving Tour: Follow the Path of the Settlers
This versatile full-day circle tour covers about 220 kilometres and begins and ends in Esterhazy but can be picked up at any point along the way. It is particularly suited to travellers staying in local hotels or campgrounds and looking for a day trip to experience the region’s diversity. This tour focuses on the variety of ethnic groups who settled the area from Ukrainian and Hungarian to Scottish and English.  Tour features include:

Driving or Cycling Tours: Biking, Back Roads and Buddas
The driving or cycling tour offers three distance options – 25, 40 and 75 kilometres, all starting and ending in Ohla and focusing on the history of Ukrainian settlement in the region. The tours feature several interesting settlement-related sites in close proximity and most of the route follows well-maintained gravel roads with low traffic volumes making it safe for both motorists and cyclists. The area’s location between Asessippi Provincial Park and Riding Mountain National Park make it ideal for cyclists looking for a new day-trip destination who already frequent these parks.  Tour features include:
